alan beers 1946 - 2016
Alan's contemporary interpretations of Irish life and horse racing have captivated a whole generation of art-lovers. His extraordinary paintings of horses possess a spontaneity that can only be achieved by a close association and understanding of horses which is thoroughly attuned to their energy and spirit. His work has been shown in numerous exhibitions both in Ireland, UK, USA and more recently in Barcelona. In 2004 he was one of 100 European artists invited to exhibit at the Platform 100 Exhibition at the ING Bank London (formerly Barings Bank) in conjunction with Discerning Eye.
Alan was born in Northern Ireland in 1946 and lived most of his life by the shores of Strangford Lough. Alan was not only a very talented and revered artist but he was also a gifted singer and musician. Alan found local fame in Ireland at a young age as the lead singer of a popular band called the Cherokees. Via the Isle of Man music took Alan to England where he settled in Oxfordshire, married his wife Rosemary and started a family. Alan returned to his native Ireland in the early 90s and lived in his childhood village of Killyleagh in Co. Down.
Alan cherished the countryside and wildlife, he possessed a great knowledge of the natural world and passed this enthusiasm to all he met. He spent his spare time beach-combing in Minerstown and Tyrella, in the shadows of the mountains of Mourne or out on his boat in and around Ringhaddy Sound and Strangford Lough. Alan's love for these things continues to live on today through his art and the passion he has instilled within others.
